Metal siding has been gaining ground in Central Oregon over the last several years, and it makes a lot of sense for this area. The climate here is tough on exterior materials. High UV, hard winters, dry summers, and a freeze and thaw cycle that puts stress on everything from paint to panel seams. Metal handles all of that exceptionally well, and when it’s installed correctly, it can last the life of the building with very little maintenance.

Most exterior materials have a weakness in the Bend climate. Wood rots if the paint fails. Vinyl can go brittle in cold and fade fast in the sun. Even fiber cement, which holds up very well here, still requires repainting on a regular cycle. Metal siding doesn’t have most of those problems.
Modern steel and aluminum siding panels come with factory-applied coatings that are baked on at high temperature. These coatings bond to the metal at a molecular level and hold color far longer than field-applied paint on other materials. Many steel panel systems carry 40-year finish warranties from the manufacturer. In the Bend sun, that’s a meaningful advantage.
Metal also doesn’t absorb moisture. There’s no rot, no swelling, and no warping from the freeze and thaw cycle. The structural integrity of the panel stays the same whether it’s January or August. For homes in higher-elevation areas around Awbrey Butte or out toward the Cascade foothills where winters are harder, that durability matters.
Metal siding is also fire-resistant, which is increasingly relevant in Central Oregon. Wildfire risk in this region is real, and having non-combustible exterior cladding is something a lot of homeowners and insurers are paying attention to.
Installing metal siding correctly requires understanding how the material moves with temperature. Steel and aluminum both expand and contract, and the panel systems are engineered with that in mind. Fasteners, seams, and trim details all have to be installed to allow for that movement. If they’re not, you get oil-canning (that wavy distortion you sometimes see in metal panels), fastener pull-through, and seam gaps over time.

Standing seam is the most popular metal siding profile for residential and high-end commercial work in Central Oregon. The vertical panels interlock at raised seams with concealed fasteners, giving a clean, modern look with no exposed hardware. We install standing seam on custom homes throughout the Bend area, and it’s become a signature look for mountain-style and contemporary builds out toward Sisters and the Cascade foothills.
Corrugated and ribbed steel panels are more economical and still extremely durable. They’re common on agricultural buildings, shops, and commercial structures, but they’ve also found a place in residential design where an industrial or barn-inspired look is part of the aesthetic. We install these on both commercial properties around Redmond and on residential projects where the homeowner wants that raw, textured look.
Horizontal metal lap siding mimics the profile of traditional clapboard or fiber cement lap siding but delivers the durability of metal. It’s a good option when homeowners want the familiar look of lap siding with the low maintenance and longevity of a metal product. We’ve installed this on re-sides in the Brookswood and Southeast Bend areas where homeowners wanted a clean update without going to a fully industrial look.
Board and batten in metal is popular on farmhouse and modern farmhouse style homes. The vertical profile with raised batten strips works well on both new construction and re-sides. It’s often combined with horizontal lap or standing seam on accent walls for a mixed-material look that’s become common in NorthWest Crossing and the newer custom builds on the west side of Bend.
Metal siding is tough but it’s not indestructible. Hail can dent steel panels. Impact from falling branches or equipment can damage sections. Older aluminum siding oxidizes and the paint fails. Fasteners corrode over time if the wrong type was used during installation. And on commercial buildings, panels sometimes get damaged by forklifts or vehicles and need replacement.

Older metal siding, particularly aluminum siding from the 1960s through the 1980s, eventually reaches a point where the original finish is oxidized, chalky, and faded. At that point the homeowner has two choices: replace the siding or repaint it. Repainting is often a very good value if the aluminum is structurally sound.
As an exterior painting contractor in Bend, we paint aluminum siding on older homes regularly. The key is proper prep. Oxidation has to be removed, the surface has to be cleaned thoroughly, and the right primer for metal surfaces has to be applied before topcoats. Paint applied over oxidized aluminum without proper prep peels fast. We’ve seen it done wrong plenty of times on homes in the Old Bend and Westside areas where the original aluminum has been through several paint cycles.
We also paint newer steel panel systems that are coming due for a finish refresh. Factory coatings last a long time, but they’re not permanent. When the finish starts to fade or chalk, repainting with a high-adhesion metal primer and a topcoat rated for metal substrates can restore the appearance and extend the life of the panels significantly.
All metal painting work gets the same full prep treatment: cleaning, scuff sanding where needed, spot priming, and proper topcoat application. We don’t shortcut the process. A metal paint job done right in Central Oregon should last ten years or more before it needs significant attention again.

This comes up a lot. Modern metal siding installed over solid sheathing with proper insulation is not noticeably louder than other siding materials in rain. The noise concern is more relevant to metal roofing or very thin panels installed over open framing without insulation. A properly detailed residential metal siding install is quiet.
Modern steel siding products use Galvalume or galvanized steel with factory coatings that prevent rust under normal conditions. The coating is what protects the steel. As long as the coating is intact, rust isn’t a concern. Scratches and cut edges that expose bare steel can develop surface rust if left unprotected, which is why cut edges should be treated with touch-up paint during installation and repair. Aluminum siding doesn’t rust at all, though it does oxidize.
Installed cost for metal siding is generally higher than fiber cement, particularly for standing seam systems. However, the long-term maintenance cost is lower since metal holds its finish longer and doesn’t need repainting as frequently.
